Hong Kong’s international business landscape continues to expand, with welcomed newcomers to the legal, insurance, technology and retail sectors.
Jun He Law Offices, one of the
major Mainland law firms, opened its Hong Kong branch office in June in a bid to extend its regional presence and gain better access to the global arena. According to the firm, China's entry into the World Trade Organization and increasing economic relations between the Mainland and Hong Kong, especially business opportunities arising from China's fast developing economy, have significantly increased demand for PRC-related legal services.
Swiss Re, a leading global reinsurer, opened the Swiss Insurance Training Centre at Cyberport in May. The Centre is the company's first international campus outside of Switzerland and provides state-of-the-art courses for insurance and reinsurance professionals from throughout the region.
Wavecom, a leading French wireless technology provider, has selected Hong Kong for its Asia Pacific R&D centre. Recognizing the need to develop its R&D capabilities in Asia to stay close to end users, the company added a new R&D arm and relocated to the Hong Kong Science Park.

Leading Italian luxury jewellery brand, Damiani, opened its first Hong Kong store in the International Financial Centre in July 29. Damiani and its Hong Kong franchise partner, Elique Limited, have strong confidence in the Hong Kong retail market and plan to open more retail shops, including a flagship store in 2007.
Singapore-based digital entertainment and learning company, Movielearn Systems Pte Ltd, has opened a Hong Kong office. Movielearn Hong Kong Ltd is part of the Digital Entertainment IncuTrain programme offered by Hong Kong's IT flagship, Cyberport. The company set up in Hong Kong in order to strengthen its position to penetrate the Hong Kong and Mainland markets.
The US-based leader in micro displays for consumer and military applications, Kopin Corporation, opened its Hong Kong subsidiary at the Hong Kong Science Park in July. The new office, Kopin (HK), will provide technical assistance to video eyewear manufacturers in the Asia region and will serve as an application development centre for video eyewear.
