Legendary Hong Kong new wave director Patrick Tam attended the North American premiere of his much anticipated film, "After this Our Exile", at the 2006 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
The film was recently nominated for seven Golden Horse Awards,
including "Best Feature Film" and "Best Leading Actor", and received an
overwhelming response at film festivals in Rome and Pusan. It was also
given the "Best Asian Film Award" and "Award for Best Artistic Contribution" at the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival.
Speaking at the premiere of the film, the Deputy Director of the HKETO,
Mr. Francis Ho, described Hong Kong films as "the ambassador of the
city”, saying, "Hong Kong films demonstrate the creativity of our people and our continuous striving for excellence. They reflect the issues of concern to our society and document our development. The many co-productions that we have with the Chinese Mainland and overseas production houses illustrate our strengths as Asia's world city.”
“After This Our Exile” marks Patrick Tam’s first directorial work in 17 years. Considered by some critics to be not only Wong Kar-Wai’s film editor, but also his teacher, Mr. Tam had not directed a film since the award-winning “My Heart is that Eternal Rose” in 1989.
Joining Mr. Tam at the opening gala and premiere were Toronto Mayor
David Miller, and Cultural Consuls of the Chinese Consulate General in
Toronto, Madam Xiuzhen Wang and Mr Shuang Chen.
