Concerted efforts to
build international confidence in Hong Kong’s safety as a tourist and
business destination have been launched in Hong Kong and Canada. The campaign launched in
Hong Kong involves myriad promotional activities, including an international
advertising blitz, a global tourism drive, international conventions, major
sports and cultural events with world renowned personalities, and overseas
visits by HKSAR’s senior and medical officials. The Director of the HKETO
(Canada), Mrs Rosanna Ure, introduced the plans to Canadian media on May 26.
Also in attendance were the Director of Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Mrs
Aliana Ho; Director of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Mr
Andrew Yui; and President of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA),
Toronto Chapter, Ms Dorothy Jean Mar. As members of the “Hong
Kong Family" they have all pledged their support for the relaunch program
initiated by the Economic Relaunch Strategy Group chaired by the HKSAR
Financial Secretary. The HKETO’s promotional
plan has begun with a series of visits by the HKETO Director to brief
provincial health ministers and research institutions to enhance
understanding and collaboration between Hong Kong and Canada. These will be
followed in June and July by a major Hong Kong Film Festival in Toronto,
Calgary and Vancouver, featuring some of the best films made by renowned
Hong Kong director John Woo. Other events being
planned include a Hong Kong Expo in Quebec City in August, a major promotion
in Ottawa and a large-scale Hong Kong exhibition in Montreal. A series of
Hong Kong-Canada business promotion activities will also be held in Toronto
and Vancouver in November/December. In addition, the HKETO will support major trade fairs organized by the HKTDC from June to November, with a view to encouraging more Canadian buyers to participate. These include “Hong Kong Gift and Premium Fair", “Hong Kong Fashion Week", “Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair" and “Hong Kong International Film TV Market." These efforts will be
complemented with travel trade road shows and consumer promotions in Canada,
as well as familiarization visits to Hong Kong by travel-trade media. As well, the HKCBA will
organize its National Board meeting in October in Hong Kong as part of the
“Hong Kong Forum" of all Hong Kong associations of overseas countries.
