"Team Clean" Sweeps Through Hong Kong

According to Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Donald Tsang, the Team Clean strategy aims to do more than boost environmental hygiene and cleanliness in Hong Kong. Its wide-ranging goals also focus on bringing about “a sea change in the way that Hong Kong people regard their living environment."

“Team Clean does not and cannot work alone," emphasized Mr Tsang. “Members of the community are the true owners of all the initiatives we have devised. Thus, efforts to improve Hong Kong’s living environment must begin with the individual, extend to the family and the immediate neighbourhood and then radiate throughout the entire community."

Short-term measures to be taken over the next 3 to 6 months include a major cleanup of streets, hawkers centres and markets and private and public housing estates.

Spitting and littering, illegal cooked food hawkers, dirty lanes and unclean toilets will be met with ‘zero tolerance' and stricter enforcement.

The longer-term strategy will engender sustained community involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment, coupled with stricter enforcement and new approaches to long-standing public hygiene problems.

Mr Tsang further said that the district administration system will play a key and proactive role in monitoring local conditions and devising new initiatives to build a sense of individual responsibility and collective community pride in environmental hygiene.
