To date, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade
Office (HKETO) has received a total of 11,500 signatures from Canadian
corporations and individuals pledging their support for healthcare
professionals in Hong Kong and Canada in the fight against SARS.
Signature campaigns were initiated and organized by Hong Kong belongers in
Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, with the full support of the HKETO.
At a ceremony organized to present certificates of appreciation to four Hong
Kong university alumni associations in Vancouver, Mrs Rosanna Ure, Director
of the HKETO, said, “We truly appreciate the overwhelming support that the
Canadian community has given to the SARS fighters in Hong Kong."
The fact that Hong Kong had gotten the SARS situation under control lent
extra impetus to Mrs Ure’s visits to major Canadian cities to garner
support for enhancing Hong Kong-Canada collaboration on medical research and
business partnership.
While in Vancouver, Mrs Ure met with the President and CEO of the Michael
Smith Foundation for Health Research, Dr Aubrey Tingle, and hosted a dinner
for the British Columbia Minister of Health Planning, the Hon Sindi Hawkins.
She also briefed local media on Hong Kong’s efforts to revitalize its
economy and outlined HKETO’s plans for a series of large-scale promotional
activities across Canada.
