In a series of meetings with medical and business professionals in Winnipeg
on May 21 and 22, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office
(Canada) (HKETO), Mrs Rosanna Ure, discussed the potential offered by
greater collaboration between Hong Kong and Canada.
At the National Microbiology Laboratory of the Canadian Science Centre for
Human and Animal Health, Mrs Ure spoke with Dr Stefan Wagener, Science
Director, Biosafety and Environment and Chief Administrative Officer, along
with other scientists. She expressed her appreciation of the Centre’s
efforts in helping Hong Kong understand the spread of the SARS virus and the
hope that her visit would strengthen the connection between the Laboratory
and its Hong Kong counterparts.
“The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has
announced the Government’s commitment in developing a CDC-type
organization for the prevention of SARS and other infectious diseases,"
said Mrs Ure. “I am sure there will be a lot of scope for collaboration
between the National Microbiology Laboratory and this planned research
centre."
Dr Wagener said that, “We at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and
Animal Health are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to collaborate
with researchers in Hong Kong and around the world."
While in Winnipeg, Mrs Ure also met with Mr Milton Sussman, Deputy Minister
of Health for Manitoba, Mr Hugh Eliasson, Deputy Minister Trade, and gave a
luncheon presentation to a group of Winnipeg business leaders.
These meetings provided Mrs Ure with a timely opportunity to update
Winnipeg’s political and business leaders on Hong Kong’s SARS situation,
as well as the tremendous business potential offered by Hong Kong and the
Pearl River Delta.
