Hong Kong Temporarily Halts Canadian Beef Imports

Canada’s first confirmed local case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) has prompted Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) to temporarily suspend the import of beef from Canada.

Announcing the measure on May 21, a FEHD spokesman said, “We welcome the Canadian Government’s transparent approach in handling the incident and are also in agreement with their control and preventive measures generally."  The suspension is deemed necessary to allow the Canadian authority time to conduct its investigation and institute remedial and preventive measures.

FEHD will be working closely with the Canadian authority and the Canadian Consulate General in Hong Kong to ensure effective management of this issue.
