Retail Sales Down in April

The provisionally estimated value of total retail sales in April was HK$12.7 billion, representing a 15.2% fall on April 2002. Concern about the local SARS situation had escalated during the month, severely affecting local consumer spending and outbound tourism.

In the first four months of 2003, retail sales declined by 5.7% in value or 3.6% in volume, compared to a year earlier.

Sales of jewellery and watches, motor vehicles and apparel were particularly hard hit. Sales of commodities in supermarkets and of miscellaneous consumer durable good increased by 8.6% and 2.8%, respectively, in volume in April, when compared with a year earlier.
