The full impact of
the SARS outbreak is evident in the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)
passenger traffic figures for May. These showed a year-on-year decline of
79.9% to 565,000. The cancellations of many passenger flights resulted in a
59% decline in the number of movements of passenger aircraft.
The outlook for passenger traffic improved towards the end of the month
when, on May 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the removal
of its recommendation against all but essential travel to Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA) is already in full swing to revitalize
the aviation industry. Shortly after the WHO announcement, the Authority
announced a multi-million-dollar package to stimulate traffic and bring
travellers back to Hong Kong.
AA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr David Pang, said, “Both passenger
numbers and aircraft movements are expected to pick up gradually in
June."
