Flying Snow
Limited, a subsidiary of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, has been awarded
the tender for the monument site of the former Marine Police Headquarters (MPHQ)
in Tsim Sha Tsui, on a 50-year land grant at a tendered price of HK$352.8
million.
A
Hong Kong Tourism Commission spokesman pointed out that this project
represents the first time the private sector has been engaged to preserve
and develop buildings of historic significance into a heritage tourism
facility.
Representatives of the Antiquities Advisory Board and the Hong Kong Tourism
Board were involved in the work of the Assessment Panel formed to examine
tender proposals and offer expert advice on heritage preservation and
tourism aspects.
The scheme put forward by Flying Snow Limited envisaged the conversion of
the main building of the MPHQ into a heritage hotel. There will be food and
beverage outlets and retail facilities. Tender conditions call for a
completion date of March 2008, but the company’s proposal indicates that
completion may be as early as the first quarter of 2007.
