A long history of mutually beneficial cultural and business ties was celebrated in Manitoba from May 29 to June 5, when the province proclaimed it "Hong Kong Week in Manitoba”.
Manitoba and Hong Kong have enjoyed an active relationship with the “Hong Kong Family”, including the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Tourism Board, and Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA).
As the Hon. Scott Smith, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade, said as he made the official proclamation: "As a result of the Province of Manitoba and Hong Kong’s business and cultural ties, it is deemed appropriate that a special week be proclaimed."
Hong Kong activities in Manitoba during this special week included "The Heritage of Hong Kong" display at the Winnipeg Millennium Library, co-organized with the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre. The display showcases 6,000 years’ of Hong Kong heritage, from archaeological sites containing pottery and stone implements of Neolithic Period, to the splendid traditional buildings of Chinese and Western styles of more recent times. The display aims to enable Canadians to appreciate Hong Kong’s rich history and unique heritage.
The announcement of Hong Kong Week was one of many highlights experienced by 300 delegates from across Canada attending the 2006 HKCBA Canada-Hong Kong Business Forum, which had as its theme, "Your Smart Link to China: HONG KONG". Forum participants gathered in Winnipeg to gain insights into the rapidly growing China market, as well as valuable information to help them devise successful strategies for selling their products, technology and know-how to mainland China.
At the opening of the two-day forum, Manitoba Deputy Premier, the Hon. Rosann Wowchuk, pointed out that, "There is room for many relationships and linkages that will benefit both Western Canadian and Chinese businesses. Just as Hong Kong is the gateway to China, so is Western Canada the gateway to the rest of Canada.”
Mr. Bassanio So, Director of the HKETO, described Hong Kong “as Canada’s beachhead in China,” citing the fact that Hong Kong is the largest recipient of Canadian foreign direct investment in China, and the second largest investor in Canada from the Asia-Oceanic region.
