April 26 may have been named “Hong Kong Culture & Heritage Day” in Toronto, but the celebrations surrounding it went on for almost a week.
Toronto Mayor David Miller’s proclamation kicked off an exciting series of cultural events organized by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada to recognize Hong Kong's arts and culture in the Greater Toronto Area, and to pay tribute to the strong Hong Kong community in Canada.
They included a Tribute to Hong Kong gala, a heritage exhibit at the Hilton Suites in Markham, the presentation of a pair of shoes by well-known Hong Kong actor Tony Leung to the Bata Shoe Museum’s Walk of Fame collection, a panel discussion at the University of Toronto marking the opening of Asian Heritage Month, and four performances of the stage production “Love in a Fallen City”, adapted from a Chinese novel by American-Chinese author Eileen Chang, at Ryerson University Theatre.
Speaking at the Tribute to Hong Kong gala, the Director of the HKETO, Mr. Bassanio So, thanked the Hong Kong community for their contributions to Canada, describing them as Hong Kong's "assets in Canada”.
Toronto’s “Hong Kong Culture & Heritage Day” was endorsed by the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper, who sent a greeting in which he recognized the "immense contributions of the Hong Kong community in the Greater Toronto Area", and "Hong Kong's dynamic culture and heritage".
Toronto’s “Hong Kong Culture & Heritage Day” represents the third such proclamation in less than a year, following one in Vancouver in January and "Hong Kong Day" in Calgary last August.
