Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China has sworn in Chief Executive
Donald Tsang, the new lineup of Principal Officials and Executive Council
members at the third-term HKSAR Government inauguration ceremony.
Some 2,000 guests attended the ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, including Central Government representatives, members of the Executive and Legislative Councils, Hong Kong delegates to the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, political and economic figures, personalities from social circles, senior executives of Hong Kong-based Chinese enterprises and the foreign diplomatic corps.
In his address, Mr. Tsang extended his gratitude to the Central People's Government and the people of Hong Kong for their support. He pledged "to do my utmost to get my job done in the best interests of Hong Kong and our country, as I promised during my election campaign.”
The next-term Government, he added, would be solely committed to adhering to the principle of people-based governance and to delivering on the pledges he had made in his election platform.
Ms. Tsang aims to:
• build a government that is more open
• develop a system that is more democratic
• promote a new mode of economic development by expanding the financial sector, investing in infrastructure to drive wage increases, and create more job opportunities
• create a better quality of life
• promote a new caring culture
"Hong Kong needs our country, and our country also needs us,” said the Chief Executive. “The greatest contribution we can make to our nation is to ensure the full implementation of ‘One country, two systems’ and ‘Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong’ under the Basic Law.”
He urged people “to aspire to achieve greater things for our country, without forgetting the pragmatic attitude on which our city’s success has been founded. Together, let us embark upon a new journey for a new decade.”
