Film Fests Celebrate, Promote Hong Kong

At the opening reception of the "Hong Kong Stories" film series are (from right): HKETO Director, Mr Bassanio So, Mr Michael Francis, Chair of Vancouver International Film Festival, and HKETO Assistant Director (Public Relations) Mr Stephen Siu.Audiences were recently treated to “Hong Kong Stories”, a selection of classic films set and filmed in Hong Kong, many of which confront issues raised by the 1997 handover, at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) Year-round at the VanCity Theatre.

In May in Toronto, the first ever University of Toronto Hong Kong Film Festival – a collaborative effort between the University of Toronto, Reel Asian International Film Festival and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office – commemorated the Hong Kong handover to China.

Hong Kong film has emerged over the past quarter century as a cutting edge window into life in Hong Kong and Asia.

Speaking at the opening of the Vancouver event, HKETO Director Mr, Bassanio So described Hong Kong films as ambassadors. "By introducing the “Hong Kong Stories” film series, I hope our Canadian friends will have a better understanding of Hong Kong films and our creative industry,” he said. “I also hope that this presentation will further foster the already strong cultural ties between Hong Kong and Canada."

The University of Toronto film festival also featured discussions with film specialists, and a panel on animation and comics.
