The Hong Kong Ballet’s North American premiere of “Legend of the Great Archer” was a great success in Toronto. It not only created high visibility for Hong Kong, but enabled art-loving Torontonians to sample Hong Kong’s distinctive cultural vibrancy.
The Hong Kong Ballet was so popular that it quickly became the “talk of the town”, resulting in the tickets selling out well in advance of the performance.
The 80-member ballet troupe embarked on their North American tour in May to spread the “Relaunch Hong Kong” message. Apart from Toronto, the tour also covered Vancouver, San Jose and Washington D.C.
The full-length ballet is the first ever to be accompanied by Chinese music created by award-winning composer, Mr Kuan Nai-chung, and played by the renowned Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. With its multi-media visual effects, the production brought a new language to ballet culture.
Hong Kong Ballet’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Helen Ng, said, “We are glad to be able to further promote Hong Kong and its national ballet company to our overseas friends. Using dance as a medium, we succeeded in impressing them with Hong Kong’s unique heritage and culture.”
The Hong Kong Ballet’s North American premiere in Toronto succeeded in raising CAD$300,000 in support of the Renaissance ROM’s China Initiative.
