It was a great honour for Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Ballet when Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell declared May 14, 2004, to be “Hong Kong Ballet Canada Tour Day” in Vancouver when he joined Hong Kong’s Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Shelley Lee, in opening the Ballet’s performance of “Legend of the Great Archer”.
To mark the occasion, Mayor Campbell presented a proclamation plaque to Ms Lee amid loud applause from the 3,000-strong audience that packed the auditorium of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
The proclamation of this special day honoured Hong Kong’s initiative in bringing its national ballet to Vancouver as part of its “Relaunch Hong Kong” North America Tour, and commemorated the Hong Kong Ballet’s Vancouver performance as a very special joint venture between Hong Kong and Vancouver.
The performance was organized by the HKETO and jointly presented with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver (CCC) and the City of Vancouver. It succeeded in raising CAD$135,000 to support the CCC’s expansion program.
After the Vancouver event, the Hong Kong Ballet moved on to San Jose and Washington to continue with its North America Tour.
