Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Visits BC

Permanent Secretary Lee (middle) meets with Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell (2nd right) to enhance the close ties between the two cities.

Hong Kong’s Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Shelley Lee, made an official visit to Vancouver in May to lead the Hong Kong Ballet Delegation to Vancouver on its mission as Hong Kong’s Goodwill Ambassadors.

Tasked to enhance the close ties between the two cities and restore confidence in Hong Kong, Ms Lee and the Hong Kong Ballet won friendship and admiration wherever they went. And they did such a wonderful job of promoting Hong Kong that the Vancouver City Government decided to honour Hong Kong by declaring May 14, 2004, the “Hong Kong Ballet Canada Tour Day”.

Accompanying Ms Lee on the visit were the Director of the HKETO, Mr Bassanio So, Member of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Ballet, Mr Peter Wynn Williams, Hong Kong Ballet’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Helen Ng, and the Chair of the Hong Kong Ballet Vancouver Performance Organizing Committee, Mr Brian Lo.

The Hong Kong Ballet’s Chairman, Mrs Cissy Pao Watari, was in Vancouver briefly to accompany Ms Lee and call on Mayor Gordon Campbell to thank him for his great support of the project.

Ms Lee later travelled to the provincial capital of Victoria, where she met senior provincial and city government officials.

At the provincial government building, Ms Lee and her party were received by the Minister of State for Women’s and Seniors’ Services, the Hon Ida Chong, the Minister for Small Business and Economic Development, the Hon John Les, the Minister of Education, the Hon Tom Christensen, and the Minister of Forest, the Hon Mike de Jong.

The Hong Kong visitors attended the British Columbia Parliament, where their presence was formally recognized.

Permanent Secretary Lee called on Mayor Alan Lowe, and visited the University of Victoria where they explored possible academic exchanges with the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Turpin, and his Vice President and Associate Vice President, Ms Faye Wightman and Dr James Anglin.

The group concluded their Victoria itinerary with a trip to a Chinese school and meetings with the local Chinese community.
