Hong Kong Wins Another Stockholm Challenge Award

Hong Kong has been named the winner in the Health category in the Stockholm Challenge Award.

The winning entry was from Hong Kong’s Health, Welfare and Food Bureau, and featured the innovative application of the Hong Kong Police’s Major Incident Investigation and Disaster Support System in collaboration with the Case Contact Information System of Hong Kong’s Department of Health and Hospital Authority’s eSARS for use in contact tracing of potential SARS carriers.

Nearly 900 projects from 107 countries competed for this year’s awards in six categories. Hong Kong received the top honour in the Public services and Democracy category in 2001.

The Stockholm Challenge Award is an international awards programme in information technology. Entries are judged by a panel of international IT experts.

The Hong Kong Secretary for Heath, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, said the award recognized the flexibility and innovation of healthcare professionals and civil servants. He said the system “was instrumental in turning the tide in our combat against the SARS epidemic.”

The Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mrs Carrie Yau, said the prize once again demonstrated Hong Kong’s competitive position as a city of innovation.

“We are delighted to see that Hong Kong’s innovation in IT applications, in particular information technology, is recognized in the international arena again.”
