Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology Welcomes Asian Electronics Forum

At the opening of the first Asian Electronics Forum, held in May, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr John Tsang, paid tribute to the strength of Hong Kong’s electronics industry. “It is our largest merchandise export earner, accounting for some 40% of our total exports,” he said.

Mr Tsang outlined the Government’s multi-pronged approach designed to carry Hong Kong to a new level of government. This approach comprises “initiatives in three major areas: promotion of innovation and technology; leverage of our strengths and experiences; and deeper integration with our neighbour, the Pearl River Delta.”

Investment in technology infrastructure resulted in the Science Park, which opened in June 2002 and which has attracted an aggregation of electronics and integrated circuit design companies.

In addition, said Mr Tsang, “with the building up of a respectable science base in Hong Kong, we have been able to draw eminent and world-class scientists and researchers from all over the world.”

He pointed out that Hong Kong’s manufacturing sector is undergoing transformation to re-position itself at the top of the value chain. “We are seeing encouraging signs that our industries are engaging in more and more original design manufacturing,” he said.

As well as empowering businesses to break new ground and build on past successes, said Mr Tsang, the Government is committed to capitalizing on the enormous advantages of “combining our innovation and technology in a successful service economy with the spectacular manufacturing base in the Pearl River Delta.

“Hong Kong is not standing still,” concluded Mr Tsang. “We are laying the foundation for sustained growth in an even higher plane of prosperity.”
