New Bridge an Investment in Hong Kong’s Future

The construction of what will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world represents the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s furthering strengthening of Hong Kong’s status as an international world-class city.

On May 11, Hong Kong’s Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao, signed a $2.76 billion construction contract for Stonecutters Bridge with Maeda-Hitachi-Yokogawa-Hsin Chong Joint Venture, an international consortium.

“This is a defining piece of architecture for Hong Kong and a reflection of the confidence of this world city to rise up to the challenges of the new millennium,” she said.

The bridge has a main span of 1,018 metres and is an important part of Route 8, a new highway that will provide direct access to Container Terminals No 8 and No 9 in Kwai Chung.

Stonecutters Bridge will have a minimum soffit level of 73.5mPD to allow next generation container vessels a clear draft, making the deck of the bridge one of the world’s highest.
