The SARS Alert Level was lowered on May 28. The Hong Kong Department of Health said the decision was made after careful assessment of the threat of SARS in Hong Kong and neighbouring areas.
The Alert Level and its corresponding control measures were activated in April when SARS cases were confirmed in Beijing and Anhui. No confirmed or suspected SARS cases have been reported on the Mainland since May 4, 2004.
The World Health Organization announced on May 18 that the chain of human-to-human transmission appeared to have been broken.
Hong Kong will continue to maintain close and proactive liaison with public health authorities in the Mainland, Macau and other countries, as well as the World Health Organization.
