Holders of valid Hong Kong identity (ID) cards who were born in 1960 or 1961 are required to apply for the new Smart ID cards between May 24 and July 24, 2004.
According to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), eligible Hong Kong residents who are in Canada during this period need not rush back solely to apply for their Smart ID cards. If they miss their turn, they can apply for their card within 30 days of their return to Hong Kong.
Eligible applicants who choose to return to Hong Kong for the ID card replacement can book an appointment by telephone at (852) 1838 333 or via the ESDlife website: www.esd.gov.hk.
Applicants should submit their applications in person at one of the Smart ID Card Centres, which are open from Monday to Saturday from 8:00am to 9:15pm.
Eligible applicants who were born in 1958 or 1959 may replace their ID cards between July 26 and September 25, 2004.
The third replacement exercise begins in September, when holders of existing ID cards born in 1956 or 1956 may obtain their Smart ID card between September 27 and November 27, 2004.
Holders of existing cards born in 1954 or 1955 may apply for Smart ID cards between November 29, 2004 and January 22, 2005. Those born in 1952 and 1953 may replace their ID cards between January 24 and March 12, 2005.
