From painted faces to dragon boats, the Brand Hong Kong icon was a popular attraction at this year’s Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, held on Centre Island on June 19 and 20.
Over 120,000 spectators gathered to cheer on the 210 competing teams in the two-day race with some in Brand Hong Kong dragon boats sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO). The vividly decorated vessels were unveiled on May 20 by the HKETO Director, Mr Bassanio So, at the Festival eye-dotting ceremony organized by the Toronto Chinese Business Association.
As a special sponsor of this year’s event, the HKETO also participated in the festival parade on June 13 to raise funds for charity, and set up a booth on Centre Island at the festival weekend to promote Asia’s world city. Thousands of Torontonians visited the booth and some were so captivated by the flying dragon symbol that they had the icon painted on their faces, arms and legs.
Visitors also enthusiastically took part in other activities at the HKETO booth, including face painting, photo displays and quizzes to enhance their knowledge about Hong Kong.
Since it was established 16 years ago, the Toronto International Dragon Boat Festival has become an extremely popular event for families in the Greater Toronto Area. This year saw a record number of 210 teams competing, making Toronto Dragon Boat Festival one of the largest such races organized outside Hong Kong.
