Hong Kong Week celebrated in Calgary

Posted in: Press Releases

August 18th, 2007

“Hong Kong Week” kicked off in Calgary with Friday’s Canada-Hong Kong Friendship Night at GobalFest 2007 and the Chinatown Street Festival today (Saturday), with an array of culinary delights, entertainment and cultural activities, showcasing the vibrant culture of the East. This year marks the third year that a “Hong Kong Week” is held in Calgary to share Hong Kong’s culture with Calgarians.

In a proclamation presented to the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada, Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier said highly about Hong Kong’s thriving spirit and he said “the impact of Hong Kong on Calgary’s culture is far reaching.” He also described GlobalFest 2007, a multi-cultural festival and international fireworks competition, as “Canada’s most explosive celebration of cultural diversity.”

Picture shows Alderman Ric McIver (right), on behalf of Mayor Bronconnier, presenting the “Hong Kong Week” proclamation to Stephen Siu, Assistant Director of the HKETO, at the opening ceremony of the Canada-Hong Kong Friendship Night at Elliston Park. Mr Siu said that the proclamation signified the strong and close ties between the two places, and reinforced this west Canadian economic stronghold’s business and cultural relations with Hong Kong. “We treasure our expanding trade links, and Hong Kong is also playing an important role as Calgary’s gateway to the mainland China market.”
