Hong Kong’s exhibition industry is booming, and the economic rewards are widespread. According to the “Economic Impact Study Report – 2006”, activities associated with Hong Kong’s exhibition industry contributed HK$26.4 billion (C$3.3 billion) to the local economy in 2006, equivalent to 1.8% of Hong Kong’s total GDP.
Benefits include the generation of expenditure and jobs for exhibition and other service industries and supporting sectors, including hotels, food and beverage, retail, stand design and construction, and logistics and freight forwarding.
In 2006, the benefits of the exhibition industry included:
• Personal expenditure by exhibition visitors amounting to HK$8.2 billion (C$1 billion)
• Business-related expenditure of HK$5 billion (C$625 million)
• Industry-related taxes contributing around $970 million (C$121 million) to the Hong Kong government
• Generation of 58,500 full-time equivalent jobs
In addition, the report showed that international exhibition visitors and exhibitors stay on average 70% longer and spend 110% more than overnight tourists.
