More HKSAR 10th Anniversary Celebrations

HK Chinese Orchestra Thrills Toronto and Vancouver
The renowned Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) performed this summer to capacity crowds in Toronto and Vancouver at concerts marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The appearances of Hong Kong’s only professional full-size Chinese orchestra were supported by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada, and sponsored by the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation in Hong Kong.

In addition to the sell-out concerts, the HKOC participated in a meet-the-media session at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto and held a master class.

The HKETO Director, Mr Bassanio So, said he was pleased to have such a distinguished group to perform in Toronto and help promote traditional Chinese music to mainstream audiences. "The HKCO is the pride of Hong Kong people,” said Mr. So. “Its members are Hong Kong's music ambassadors. Their performance with the leading local musicians this evening and later at Festival Vancouver will provide great opportunities for Canadians to better understand Chinese culture and appreciate Chinese music."

Nancy Chu Woo Exhibit Reflects East-meets-West
An exhibition by Hong Kong colourist Nancy Chu Woo was one of the many events held by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada to mark the 10th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China.

"The Art of Nancy Chu Woo" was co-presented in Toronto by HKETO Director Mr. Bassanio So, and Member of Parliament Mr. Joe Volpe and sponsored by the RBC Financial Group and Tour East Holidays. The exhibition premiered at Parliament Hill in Ottawa in mid-October before opening in Toronto’s Carrier Art Gallery of the Columbus Centre.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr So said he was delighted to have one of Hong Kong's most celebrated colourists showcase her unique "jewel-like" painting style, which "represents a brand new form of modern Chinese art, as well as a fusion of East and West - from past to present."

HKSAR 10th Anniversary Display at Toronto KiteFest
The Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Canada staged a photo exhibition jointly produced by the HKSAR Government’s Information Services Department and the Chinese Ministry of Culture at the 13th annual KiteFest in Toronto’s Milliken Park in September.

Dozens of dignitaries from Canada’s three levels of government and foreign consulates gathered at the event, which attracted over 80,000 people, including kite-flying teams from France, the Unites States and Canada.

The display featured Hong Kong as a diverse and fascinating city, and showcased its achievements in the past 10 years as a dynamic and enterprising city, a leading centre of regional and international trade and finance, and a fusion of east and west.
